Free Jazz, Free Voices: The Power of Imagining a Better World

The “FREE JAZZ , FREE VOICES” series, which originated at Terraza 7, includes Free Jazz - Cinema & Social Movements, and connects musical improvisation with visual images centered on themes of migration and social justice. This approach aligns deeply with the mission of Terraza 7 and Acoustic Memories to promote inclusion, intercultural dialogue, and social activism through collaborative and experimental art forms. The series has now expanded to other venues, public libraries, and parks, ensuring these conversations reach even broader audiences.

Importance for Artists:

1.   Interdisciplinary Experimentation and Creation: The series provides free improvisation musicians with a unique space to collaborate with emerging filmmakers and photographers. Inspired by images on social themes, artists can explore new forms of expression and enrich their creative practices, in line with Acoustic Memories’ vision of fostering dialogue between cultural memories and new practices.

2.   Platform for Social Awareness: By combining improvised music with films about migrant experiences and other social issues, the series allows artists to use their talents to address critical issues, raising awareness and promoting social change. This reflects Terraza 7’s mission to offer a space where art is a powerful tool for political participation and activism, a mission now expanded to new venues.

Importance for the Community:

1.   Fostering Intercultural Dialogue: In a diverse environment like Queens, the series enables meaningful dialogue between the community and artists on topics such as migration, identity, and social justice. This exchange reinforces the role of Terraza 7 and other spaces as community centers that value cultural diversity and mutual understanding.

2.   Space for Critical Reflection and Solidarity: By integrating artistic performances with images on relevant issues, the series not only offers entertainment but also an opportunity for critical reflection and learning. This aligns with Acoustic Memories’ goal of building more inclusive and supportive communities through art, now in multiple settings.

“FREE JAZZ FOR A FREE WORLD” is more than a concert series; it is a platform for social activism and intercultural dialogue that started at Terraza 7 and now reaches across other venues, public parks, and libraries. By combining music, film, and social themes, the series creates an inclusive space where artists and the community can connect, learn, and collaborate, thus strengthening the values of equality, diversity, and solidarity that define Terraza 7 and Acoustic Memories.
